Spider-Man to ‘Marry’ Friday Night at Shea Stadium

June 2, 1987

NEW YORK (AP) _ They were literally made for each other, a match made in comic-book heaven. The Amazing Spider-Man will tie the knot, so to speak, with Mary Jane Watson on Friday night.

At Shea Stadium, before a Pirates-Mets game, two models dressed as the sticky-fingered superhero and his fictional fiancee will be married in a mock ceremony officiated by Stan Lee, publisher of Marvel Comics and creator of Spider-Man.

″He’s been pacing the ceiling for weeks,″ said Tara Shannon, who will play Ms. Watson, who is an actress, model and computer businesswoman in the popular comic book.

A special wedding issue of the comic book goes on sale June 9, and Friday’s home-plate ceremony is a promotional stunt.

Ms. Watson’s form-fitting gown of lace, satin and tulle was designed by the late Willi Smith, his last project before he died earlier this year. Her wedding ring will feature a black widow spider setting.

Spider-Man - whose alter-ego is Peter Parker, a photographer for the mythical Daily Bugle in Manhattan - will wear a black tail coat also designed by Smith.

In attendance at Friday’s ceremony will be the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Ice-Man, Fire-Star, Green Goblin and Dr. Doom, along with a crowd of about 45,000.

And returning to pitch for the Mets that night will be their own superhero, Dwight Gooden, who makes his first major league appearance of the season after being treated for cocaine use.
