Rebels Claim Successful Attack on Army Base
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) _ The rebel Somali National Movement says its forces killed 70 government troops this week in an attack on an army base in northwestern Somalia.
The report, carried on the rebels’ clandestine Radio Halgan (Struggle) and monitored in Nairobi, said the attack on the Balli Abane garrison occurred Tuesday, the 17th anniversary of the military coup that brought President Mohamed Siad Barre to power.
The Somali National Movement, one of two insurgent groups trying to oust Siad Barre, said in the broadcast Thursday that 62 government soldiers were wounded in the attack and a MiG-17 fighter plane was shot down.
The radio said two rebel fighters were killed and seven wounded.
There was no government comment on the rebel report and no independent means of verifying the claims.
