Short-Term Impeachment Schedule

January 23, 1999

Short-term schedule of expected developments in the Senate impeachment trial:

President Clinton’s trial resumes Monday at 1 p.m. EST.

Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., said senators expect to send President Clinton a series of written questions by Monday in hopes he can explain some of the inconsistencies in the case.

Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., plans to offer a motion to dismiss the case. The House managers and White House lawyers would have an hour each to argue the motion.

There also is expected to be a motion to subpoena a list of witnesses. The White House lawyers and the House would have three hours each to discuss that motion.

It was not clear if the senators will be permitted to debate either question. Also not clear is whether any debate will be open, or all proceedings closed to the public.

Either motion would take a simple majority of 51 senators to pass.
