3 firefighters overcome by heat battling business fire
PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) — Three Rhode Island firefighters were taken to the hospital for heat-related issues while battling a business fire in Pawtucket.
Dozens of firefighters battled the blaze at Kars and Kuts for about four hours Tuesday. The building houses a car wash, an auto body shop and a barbershop.
Capt. Michael Thurber says one Pawtucket firefighter and two Central Falls firefighters were taken to Miriam Hospital after they exhibited signs of heat exhaustion.
Several apartments behind the business were evacuated over concerns there were hazardous materials inside.
The fire remains under investigation but Thurber says there is nothing yet to suggest the fire is suspicious.
He says a portion of roof collapsed and all the cars, tires and auto parts that were inside are a loss.
