Nebraska State Patrol urging motorists to watch out for snow plows

December 31, 2018

LINCOLN - With the recent winter weather snow plow drivers have been making their rounds across the state to keep the roads clear.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation has more than 630 snow plows and 1,000 team members prepared to handle snow removal throughout Nebraska.

Nebraska State Patrol Public Relations Director Cody Thomas encourages you to drive carefully around snow plows.

“They’re traveling slower, usually about 25 to 30 miles per hour so when you approach a snow plow give them room to maneuver. They need a wide berth to maneuver, they don’t take turns as sharp as your vehicle is able to. Don’t crowd them, give them around 100 feet if possible in that area.”

Thomas says travelers are urged to check 511 for the most up-to-date travel conditions.

He says you can dial 511, check the website, or download the smartphone app.

Also, anyone who becomes stranded can call *55 to reach the state patrol highway helpline or call 911 for an emergency.
