Terrain 11 preview night brings artists, art fans together

September 27, 2018

At this point, “Terrain” has a permanent place in the Spokane lexicon.

When Terrain organizes or assists with an event, you know it’s going to feature some of the Inland Northwest’s most talented artists, musicians, poets and creators.

But the arts organization’s annual namesake flagship event is by far its most anticipated.

In its first year, 2008, 30 artists submitted work seen by about 1,200 people.

Last year, more than 300 artists submitted work to Terrain, and 8,500 people took in the show.

Due to popular demand from artists and art fans alike, Terrain 10 marked the first year the organization offered a preview night, inviting the public to its exclusive artist reception.

More than 1,000 people took advantage of the opportunity to beat the crowds, chat with the artists and get the first chance to purchase work.

So, Terrain 11 will also feature a preview night, Oct 4 at the Jensen Byrd Building.

Though more intimate than Terrain, Oct. 5, preview night is still a party, with a night of live music to keep things lively.

A DJ will perform from 5-7 p.m. before Seattle neo-soul quintet Hoshin takes the stage.

The band released its debut single, “Waco,” on Sept. 22.

Continuing the Emerald City theme, Seattle rapper Porter Ray, who released “Watercolors” last year, and “hologram funk” singer Sassyblack, who is teasing the upcoming release of a limited edition 7-inch called “Wakanda Funk Lounge” on Facebook, will then perform.

The evening will close on a local note when Spokane retro-pop supergroup Super Sparkle takes the stage.

The band released “Songs Out the Window” last year.

According to the crew at Terrain, this year’s event is shaping up to be the biggest yet, with more than 250 artists, poets, filmmakers, musicians and other artists exhibiting and performing more than 500 works.

Terrain 11 features both emerging artists making their Terrain debut and lots of familiar faces bringing new work with them.

Check out the Oct. 5 7 section for a complete preview of Terrain.
