TAUNTON, England (AP) — England wicketkeeper-batsman Craig Kieswetter is unlikely to play at the 2015 Cricket World Cup because of a serious eye injury.

Somerset, Kieswetter's English county side, says in a statement that the 27-year-old player "has struggled to regain perfect vision" after suffering a "terrible" eye injury in a domestic game in July.

Somerset says Wednesday that South Africa-born Kieswetter is withdrawing from the Big Bash Twenty20 competition starting next week in Australia, where he would have represented Sydney Thunder, and that "it is unlikely that he will be fit for the 2015 season."

He was named on Saturday in England's provisional 30-man squad for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, starting in February.

Kieswetter, who has made 46 ODI appearances for England, recently played Twenty20 cricket in South Africa.
