FULLERTON, Calif. (AP)_Carlos Ruiz scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Los Angeles Galaxy’s 4-1 victory over the Dallas Burn on Tuesday night in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals.

Los Angeles, the defending Cup champion, will play either the Columbus Crew or the Kansas City Wizards for the championship in October.

Ruiz, Major League Soccer’s leading scorer, gave the Galaxy a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute at Cal State Fullerton’s Titan Stadium. Ruiz launched a 30-yard line drive into the upper-right corner of the net.

Six minutes later, Mauricio Cienfuegos scored Los Angeles’ second goal. An onrushing Cienfuegos turned Ruiz’s pass into a low 18-yard shot between goalkeeper Matt Jordan and the right post.

Cobi Jones converted another Ruiz pass into a goal in the 35th minute. Ruiz tied Johnny Menyongar of the A-League’s Minnesota Thunder as the U.S. Open Cup’s leading scorer with nine points.

The Galaxy’s Simon Elliott added a penalty kick in the 81st minute.

Dallas’ Ronald Cerritos broke the shutout in the 89th minute.

The U.S. Open Cup, played since 1914, is one of the world’s oldest soccer tournaments. This year, 147 American teams ranging in talent from MLS to semipro competed.
