September 9, 1998

NEW YORK (AP) _ Police searched Tuesday for a television news producer missing since his boat capsized during a ferocious storm that swept through the area.

Bruce Hagan, a producer for ``Dateline NBC,″ was on board a 24-foot sailboat at 2:30 p.m. Monday when it tipped over in New York Harbor, a half mile east of the Statue of Liberty, said Officer Joe Marino, a police department spokesman.

Police harbor boats responded to distress signals and rescued Hagan’s wife, Kathy, their 11-year old daughter Alexandra, 40-year-old David Hinchman and 11-year old Ruth Hofharmar, a friend of Alexandra.

The four were taken to Sisters of Charity Medical Center, Bayley Seton Campus on Staten Island, where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

The search for Hagan resumed Tuesday but was suspended during the afternoon and scheduled to resume Wednesday morning.

Hagan, 43, has worked for many of the city’s radio and television stations and The Associated Press during a 20-year career in the business.
