Former educator claims wrongful termination in lawsuit
YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — A former paraeducator is suing a school district in southern Washington state, claiming she was wrongly fired for challenging policies involving special needs students.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports Veronica Vargas filed the suit last week against the Mabton School District after she was placed on unpaid leave and later fired in February 2017.
According to the suit, Vargas raised concerns about the district’s limited resources and limited staff. The suit claims some of the policies violated federal law, but it doesn’t give specific details.
Superintendent Joey Castilleja says the complaints mainly involve the treatment of one student. He says he cannot elaborate on the case because of student privacy laws, but the district is working with that student’s parents to resolve any problems.
