Beached sick dolphin in Rhode Island is euthanized
BARRINGTON, R.I. (AP) — Marine mammal experts have euthanized a bottlenose dolphin that became stranded in a Rhode Island salt marsh.
The dolphin was spotted by residents of Smith Cove in Barrington on Wednesday morning.
State Department of Environmental Management personnel as well as an animal rescue team from the nearby Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut responded to the scene.
Jen Flower, an aquarium veterinarian, performed a full exam on the dolphin and determined it was “very, very sick” with trouble breathing and a low heart rate.
She said it was determined that rather than making a rescue attempt the best course of action would be to put the dolphin down to minimize suffering.
The dolphin will be brought back to the aquarium for further examination.
