Company Moving Headquarters to Atlanta
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) _ RJR Nabisco Inc. will move its corporate headquarters to Atlanta, the company’s board of directors announced.
David Fishel, RJR Nabisco spokesman, said Thursday that the move was a difficult decision for the company to make, but that it would benefit the conglomerate in part because of ″easy access to national and international travel.″
Fishel said the domestic headquarters of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco would remain in Winston-Salem and that the company would give its former world headquarters building to Wake Forest University.
Despite the move, which some civic leaders feared would hurt the city, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco will continue to employ about 14,000 people in the Winston- Salem area, Fishel said at a news conference after the board meeting.
″We will remain one of the largest employers and taxpayers in North Carolina,″ Fishel said.
In addition, he said, the international headquarters for Reynolds’ tobacco operations would be relocated to London.
