Trooper Kills Motorist After Being Dragged A Block
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) _ A state trooper shot and killed a suspected drunken driver Sunday after the motorist grabbed his arm and dragged him a block, authorities said.
Trooper J.L. Dowe stopped the pickup truck downtown and was questioning the driver when he drove off, said Tom Hegele, a spokesman for the state Department of Crime Control and Public Safety.
″The trooper’s left arm was inside the vehicle,″ he said. ″I don’t know why, if he was trying to kick it out of gear or shut it off or what. The guy grabbed him and took off.
″He tried to brush him off against a telephone pole,″ Hegele said. ″The trooper was begging him to let him go.″
After being dragged about a block, Dowe fired four shots into the truck, Hegele said.
Dowe was released and the truck continued another block before it hit a parked car at a service station. The motorist was identified as Frankie Lynn Barker, 35, of Fayetteville, Hegele said.
Dowe was hospitalized in stable condition after receiving stitches in his head and being treated for abrasions over much of his body, Hegele said.
Dowe has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, Hegele said.
