Police shoot man they say was armed, mother disputes account

December 29, 2018

GLENDALE HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) — A suburban Chicago police department says officers shot a man who refused orders to drop two knives, but the man’s mother is disputing the department’s account.

The Daily Herald reports Glendale Heights police responded to a domestic disturbance around 1 a.m. Saturday. Police say the man was shot after not complying with their commands. His injuries aren’t life-threatening.

Connie Almeida says she called police because she and her son were arguing. She says he’s a paranoid schizophrenic and that police have been to their home before and officers should’ve known how to deal with him. Almeida says the situation was “blown out of proportion” by police and denies her son was armed.

The DuPage County major Crimes Task Force is investigating. Police say they’ll share more details when they become available.
