Fair Season Is Near; Autumn Is In The Air
Even though the first day of fall doesn’t officially begin until Sunday, Sept. 23, the mention of the Luzerne County Fair brings to mind hoodie/sweater weather. It’s Labor Day weekend, the children are back in school, evenings are cooler, and the anticipation of fall is in the air. The Luzerne County Fair opens Wednesday, Sept. 5, and concludes Sunday, Sept. 9, so there is plenty of time to visit the fair with your family. Make some memories and have a safe Labor Day weekend. Fall festival The Good Shepherd Polish National Catholic Church, 269 E. Main St., Plymouth, will hold a fall festival from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8. Event is eat in or take out. Menu includes potato pancakes, piggies, pierogi, halushki, wimpies, sausage and peppers, hot dogs, cheeseburgers, hamburgers, Polish burgers, kielbasi and kraut sandwiches, and clam chowder. There will be a selection of homemade pies, baked goods and apple dumplings. A basket auction and plant table will be featured along with music by Classic DJ’s Music Box production Northeast Pennsylvania’s premiere of “Mamma Mia!” will be held at the Music Box Dinner Playhouse, Hughes Street, Swoyersville. The musical opens Friday, Sept. 7, and runs Thursdays through Sundays until Sept. 23. Join them for dinner and a show, or if you would prefer, the show only. For Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening performances, doors open at 6 p.m., with the buffet opening at 6:30 p.m. and curtain up at 8. For the Sunday matinee performances, doors open at 1 p.m., with the buffet opening at 1:30 and curtain up at 3. There will be a special show only matinee performance at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22. Try ice hockey The Spartan Ice Hockey Club will host a ‘Try Hockey Free’ clinic at the Revolution Ice Centre in Pittston from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9. Registration is at 4:30 p.m. The clinic is for boys and girls in grades 6-12. Limited hockey gear, helmets and gloves, will be available, and skates will be available to all. Pre-registration is not required, but is encouraged by emailing Becky at firstname.lastname@example.org. Scholarship open The Swoyersville Kiwanis Club is sponsoring a Scholarship Open at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Wilkes-Barre Golf Club, Wilkes-Barre. Format is captain and crew.
