Red Wolves oust T-birds 3-2 in AIA play-in game
BULLHEAD CITY — The T-birds were in the driver’s seat at halftime, but the wheels fell off in the second half.
Mohave High School squandered a first-half, two-goal lead en route to its 3-2 loss to the Red Raiders at Warden Grove High School during an Arizona Interscholastic Association Boys Soccer 4A Conference Play-In game on Thursday night.
Forward Axel Sandoval scored off an assist from forward Josue Lizarrage, which put Mohave ahead 1-0 during the 12th minute.
Lizarraga scored off an assist from forward Logan Burgess, which made it 2-0 during the 20th minute.
Midfielder Jacob Garcia’s shot beat Mohave keeper Renzo Perez low to the left side, which made it 2-1 during the 62nd minute.
“It was a good shot,” T-birds head coach Matt Camacho said by cell phone. “It was a well-deserved goal.”
Garcia beat Perez high to the far post from 18 yards, which tied it at 2-2 during the 72nd minute.
Then striker Javier Iriarte headed a free kick, which beat Perez to the back post for the game-winner during the 77th minute.
The No. 20-seeded Mohave squad’s season ended up 5-5-3 overall, 3-5-2 in conference and 3-2-1 in the Grand Canyon Region, and the No. 11-seeded Red Wolves are 7-4-1 overall, 4-3-1 in conference and 6-4-1 in the Gila Region.
