men’s college basketball WestConn stuns Calhoun’sSt. Joseph in overtime
DANBURY — It’s not too often that one of the sport’s greatest coaches of all time walks onto the court at Feldman Arena.
There won’t be too many games in the O’Neill Center more dramatic than the one that took place Wednesday night, either.
Geary McLeod scored 28 points, Aaron Samuel added 23 and the WestConn men’s basketball team rallied from 21 points down to stun Jim Calhoun-led St. Joseph in a nonconference matchup with a 98-95 overtime victory.
WestConn (8-4) trailed 35-14 midway though the first half and by 13 with less than four minutes left before the hosts staged a rally. A layup by McLeod cut the deficit to 88-86 with 16 seconds left; St. Joseph only converted one of two free throws to give the hosts a chance to extend the game.
Tracy Cleckley Jr. buried a 3-pointer with one second left to tie the game and send it to overtime.
The extra session came right down to the wire, though WestConn never trailed. The lead was 97-95 before the visitors missed a 3-pointer with four seconds that could have won St. Joseph the contest.
Rashard Rodriguez added 19 points for WestConn while Cleckley Jr. had 14. McLeod was a near-perfect 11 for 12 from the field, including 3 for 3 from downtown.
