Barring a last-minute stay by the US Supreme Court, Tennessee is scheduled to execute its first death row inmate in nearly a decade on Thursday. Billy Ray Irick, scheduled to die for the rape and murder of a 7-year-old girl he was babysitting in east Tennessee in 1986, would be the first US inmate executed after Pope Francis said earlier this month that the death penalty is unacceptable in all cases.
