Selena on the big screen

August 12, 2018

It’s Round 2 of the Houston Chronicle’s Top Texas Films series at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and we’re bringing back “Selena,” the Jenifer Lopez-led biopic about the legendary singer.

The 1997 film, which landed at No. 23 on our list of the greatest Texas films of all time, became a launching point for Lopez’s career. It also served as an educational opportunity for the rest of the world to understand the rapturous appeal of Selena — her music and her very presence.

Few people understand that appeal as well as Chronicle pop-music critic Joey Guerra. He’s written extensively about Selena and will introduce the movie Sunday evening. He might even be joined by a Selena tribute singer. You’ll have to be there to find out.

The film begins at 7 p.m. Sunday in the MFAH’s theater. Tickets cost $7-$9. Call 713-639-7300 for more information or visit mfah.org.
