America gets 3rd straight win in Mexico
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico international Raul Jimenez scored three goals in America’s 4-0 win on Saturday over Puebla, maintaining the team’s perfect record after three rounds of matches in Mexico’s first division Apertura championship.
Atlas defeated Chiapas 4-2 and improved to second, with Monterrey in third after its 0-0 draw against Santos Laguna. Both played Saturday and are two points behind America.
In Sunday’s game, Pablo Velazquez scored twice in Toluca’s 2-1 victory over Pumas.
In other games this weekend, Queretaro defeated Pachuca 2-0, Leon won 4-0 against Morelia, Tijuana drew 1-1 with Tigres and Cruz Azul tied 0-0 against Veracruz.
Jimenez opened the scoring in the 16th minute, heading in from a tight angle, then added his second from the penalty spot in the 62nd and completed his hat trick in the 76th. Oribe Peralta got America’s other goal in the 73rd.
Atlas came from behind twice against Chiapas. Arturo Gonzalez struck the first equalizer from a direct free kick in the 18th, after Matias Vuoso had put Chiapas ahead in the eighth. Emiliano Armenteros again put Chiapas ahead in the 41st, before a lofted shot two minutes before halftime by Rodrigo Millar brought Atlas level.
Luis Caballero and Enrique Esqueda both netted for Atlas in the second half.
Luis Silva came closest to scoring for Monterrey, which had more shots and possession than Santos Laguna.
Velazquez headed in the winner for Toluca 10 minutes from the end. The Paraguayan had put Toluca ahead with a penalty in the 27th, with Matias Britos equalizing two minutes later.
Queretaro took the lead in the 59th through Camilo Sanvezzo, with Angel Sepulveda adding the second in injury time.
Yamilson Rivera, Carlos Pena, Jose Maria Cardenas and Miguel Sabah all scored goals in the second half for Leon.
Juninho volleyed Tigres level in the 25th, after Dario Benedetto handed Tijuana the lead in the 11th.
Cruz Azul had 27 shots against Veracruz, but couldn’t find a way past goalkeeper Meliton Hernandez.
The final match of the round of games between Chivas and Leones Negros was postponed until Sept. 7.
