Class 3A, 2A county teams open league play
Douglas County’s small-school 11-man football teams in Class 3A and 2A will get their leagues started this week.
Glide and Oakland will play at home in Class 2A openers, with Reedsport on the road.
In Class 3A, Sutherlin will host La Pine while South Umpqua and Douglas will both be on the road Friday evening against Brookings-Harbor and St. Mary’s, respectively.
Camas Valley and Days Creek will square off in an eight-man matchup on Saturday in Camas Valley, while the other eight-man teams will play Friday.
Here are some of the things to look for this weekend. All games start at 7 p.m., unless otherwise indicated.
ILLINOIS VALLEY (2-2) AT GLIDE (3-1) — Glide, the No. 9 team in the OSAA 2A power rankings, will host Illinois Valley in its homecoming game.
“We always expect a win,” Glide coach Jody Doty said. “But honestly, it’s a brand new league for us. We haven’t seen these teams yet and we’ve been trying to follow how they’ve been doing up to this point in time and it’s really been a mixed review of how people have been playing.
“We’re preparing for as much as possible. It’s our homecoming, so there’s lots of distractions for us this week, but we’re doing our best to stay focused and get ready.”
The two teams have not faced each other since fall 2013, when Glide fell 55-21. This week, they’ll face each other in the Class 2A Special District 5 opener and the Wildcats are favored to win.
Coach Doty said the Wildcats have been focused on bettering their own game, rather than preparing specifically for I.V.
“We need to fix us and not worry about anything else,” Doty said. “Our offense has things to fix yet, we’re struggling with penalties and some of those aspects we need to clean up as we get more into the season.”
Both teams dropped from 3A to 2A this year.
REGIS (0-4) AT OAKLAND (0-4) — One of these teams will get their first win on Friday at Eddy Field.
Oakland and Regis were winless in preseason play and will open Class 2A Special District 3 play against one another.
REEDSPORT (2-2) AT TOLEDO (2-2) — Reedsport will go up against Toledo in the Class 2A Special District 4 opener.
The Boomers are No. 6 in the power rankings, while the Brave is No. 15.
It should be a high-scoring game. Each team has allowed more than 130 points in the first four games.
LA PINE (2-2) AT SUTHERLIN (3-1) — Sutherlin started off strong in the preseason, but will now have to prove itself in the new Class 3A Special District 2 North.
The Bulldogs are No. 7 team in the 3A power rankings following a come-from-behind 24-20 win at South Umpqua last week.
SOUTH UMPQUA (2-2) AT BROOKINGS-HARBOR (3-1)— The Lancers will visit the Bruins for their Class 3A Special District 2 South opener.
South Umpqua blew a 20-point lead to Sutherlin last week and will still be without some of its key starters. Brookings is looking to make a statement after last year’s 47-7 loss to the Lancers.
DOUGLAS (0-4) AT ST. MARY’S (2-2) — Douglas is still looking for its first win of the season.
The Trojans will take on St. Mary’s of Medford at U.S. Cellular Community Park in the Class 3A Special District 2 South opener.
LOWELL (2-2, 1-0) AT ELKTON (4-0, 1-0) — Elkton comes into Friday’s 4 p.m. game against Lowell undefeated.
The Elks are the No. 2 team in the 1A power rankings and won a close game over the North Douglas Warriors last week in Drain.
The Red Devils are coming off a lopsided win over Yoncalla and despite its record the historically good team could pose a challenge for the Elks.
MAPLETON (3-1, 1-0) AT YONCALLA (1-2, 0-1) — The Eagles will look to end their two-game losing streak in Friday’s game against Mapleton.
The Sailors are coming off two wins. Yoncalla fell 80-30 to Lowell last week, but put up a fight against the Camas Valley Hornets in a 34-32 loss the week before.
NORTH DOUGLAS (2-2, 0-1) AT OAKRIDGE (2-2, 0-1) — North Douglas lost a close game to Elkton last week at home and is hoping to bounce back on the road against Oakridge.
North Douglas is No. 9 n the power rankings. Oakridge is playing down from 2A.
GLENDALE (0-4, 0-1) AT RIDDLE (3-1, 1-0) — The Irish, the top-ranked team in Class 1A Special District 2 West, is taking on the winless Pirates at home.
Riddle will look to extend its three-game winning streak, while Glendale hopes to break through in the win column.
DAYS CREEK (3-1, 1-0) AT CAMAS VALLEY (2-1, 1-0) — The Hornets will host Days Creek at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Wolves are No. 10 and Camas Valley is No. 11 in the power rankings.
