UNT Names Villarreal to AD Post

April 4, 2001

DENTON, Texas (AP) _ North Texas ended its four-month search for an athletic director Wednesday by hiring Rick Villarreal, a former athletic administrator at Southern Mississippi.

Villarreal replaces Craig Helwig, who resigned Nov. 22 after six years that included moving North Texas football from Division I-AA to I-A in 1996.

One of the first orders of business for Villarreal will be to name a new men’s basketball coach. School president Norval Pohl last month fired Vic Trilli, who was just 4-24 last season and 20-87 in his four years.

Before spending the last three years as associate athletic director at Southern Miss, his alma mater, Villarreal was director of football operations at Texas Christian from 1995-97 for former Horned Frogs coach Pat Sullivan.
