Man Accused of Stalking Woman He Met Once _ 31 Years Ago
FINDLAY, Ohio (AP) _ A man was charged with stalking a woman who gave him a ride he never forgot 31 years ago.
The woman met Jerome Sly just once, when he was eating at a sandwich shop where her mother worked, police Lt. Tom Renninger said.
Sly needed a ride to Toledo, 40 miles away, and the 18-year-old woman agreed to take him, Renninger said. That was in 1964.
``That was their only contact,″ he said.
Sly tracked down the woman’s married name through an obituary of her mother, then last week sent her four dozen roses and a stack of letters, Renninger said.
Police found 62 gifts _ one for every Christmas and birthday the two were apart _ along with a set of wedding rings, champagne and toasting glasses in Sly’s truck and house. The gifts, some wrapped, included perfume and lingerie.
``It’s very bizarre,″ Renninger said.
Sly, 51, was held Saturday on the misdemeanor stalking charge. A judge issued a protection order Friday for the 49-year-old woman, who lives in Findlay, about 40 miles south of Toledo.
