New Independent Council Rejected

January 29, 1999

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Attorney General Janet Reno rejected on Friday an independent counsel investigation of former White House deputy chief of staff Harold Ickes for allegedly lying to a Senate committee looking into campaign finances.

``There is no reasonable basis to believe that any additional investigation would discover additional evidence sufficient to prove that Ickes’ testimony was knowingly and intentionally false,″ she concluded in a 35-page analysis of the case.
