Enqvist Tops Clement in Australia

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) _ Defending champion Thomas Enqvist of Sweden began defense of his title at the AAPT championships with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Arnaud Clement of France on Tuesday.

The top-seeded Swede, who rose to world No. 5 after his win at Adelaide last year, took a 4-1 lead in the first set. Enqvist held serve to take the set, then was forced to play several long games in the second set _ including nine deuces in four games _ before claiming the victory.

In other matches involving seeded players, No. 2 Tim Henman of Britain beat Jaun Balcells of Spain 6-4, 7-6 (7-4); No. 7 Sebastien Grosjean of France defeated Andrew Ilie of Australia 6-2, 6-1, and No. 8 Nicolas Escude of France beat Paul Baccanello of Australia 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 6-3.
