NY school district is installing facial recognition security

May 29, 2019

LOCKPORT, N.Y. (AP) — A western New York school district is moving ahead with plans to use facial recognition technology.

WKBW says the Lockport City School District will start implementing a facial recognition system on June 3 and hopes to have it ready by Sept. 1.

The plan opened a debate last year about the system’s potential effectiveness, student privacy and civil rights.

The district says it’s confident that it will be in compliance with privacy laws.

The goal is to enable security officers to quickly respond to the appearance of expelled students, disgruntled employees, sex offenders or certain weapons the system is programmed to detect.
