‘It Will Be a Grind Each Week’: Fitchburg State Releases Baseball Schedule
FITCHBURG -- Fitchburg State University has announced the upcoming schedule for the baseball team’s 2019 season.
The Falcons are slated play a total of 40 games, including seven during their annual spring trip to Lake Myrtle, Florida.
Fitchburg State concluded last season with an overall record of 13-17-2 and a 6-7-1 mark in MASCAC play, en-route to earning the fifth seed in the MASCAC postseason tournament.
This season, Fitchburg State is scheduled to play two teams that qualified for the 2018 NCAA Division 3 regional tournament, while also playing six teams that won at least 20 games last season.
“We should compete toward the top half of our conference,” Fitchburg State head coach Kevin Barnaby said. “Our conference is very deep this year, and with the new three-game format being implemented, it will be a grind each week.”
Sophomore Ryan Towle is the Falcons’ top returning pitcher after posting a team-best 1.53 ERA last season, while classmate Nicholas Cordeau ranked second on the squad with a .304 batting average.
Other impact returners include junior Brennan Cuddahy, a former Leominster High School star who hit .258 with 20 RBIs last season, and classmate Richard Sharpe, of Townsend, who concluded the 2018 season with an overall record of 2-2 with a 2.89 ERA.
Senior Tommy Parsons gives the Falcons’ pitchers some leadership after registering 43 strikeouts during his junior campaign, while veteran Noah Millard, of Leominster, adds versatility in both the infield and outfield after batting .324 with 23 hits, including six doubles, two homers, 16 runs scored and 13 RBIs.
Top incoming players for the Falcons this season include freshman Brendan Ferrell and Vincent Eramo, among others.
“Our 2019 schedule includes a mix of tough non-conference opponents, such as Fontbonne, Suffolk, Salve Regina and Clark, in addition to the always-competitive MASCAC slate of games, which include Salem State, Framingham State and Westfield State, as well as MCLA, Mass. Maritime, Bridgewater State and Sterling Cup rival Worcester State,” Barnaby said.
The Falcons open the 2019 slate on March 2 as they travel to Salve Regina, then Curry College the following day for a pair of non-conference matchups to open the season before taking on Newbury College on Tuesday, March 5.
Fitchburg State then embarks on its annual spring trip to Lake Myrtle, Florida, where the Falcons will take on Fontbonne, Becker, Dickinson, Cornell College and Suffolk before returning north with visits to Anna Maria and WPI.
Fitchburg State will host its home opener on March 23 in a doubleheader against the Anchormen of Rhode Island College. The Falcons will open conference play on March 29, hosting Mass. Maritime Academy for the first of a three-game series at the New England Baseball Complex, while traveling to Mass. Maritime the following day for a conference doubleheader.
The MASCAC postseason tournament is scheduled to begin May 9, with the championship game set for May 12.
