Roma players refused entry to Indonesia

July 25, 2015

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Five Roma players have been denied entry to Indonesia during the club’s preseason tour and forced to fly back to Italy.

Indonesian authorities said the Serie A players had arrived without visas at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International airport.

The squad traveled from Australia, where it had played friendlies against Real Madrid and Manchester City, and was in Indonesia on Saturday for its final stop on a preseason tour.

The players — Seydou Doumbia and Gervinho from Ivory Coast, Victor Ibarbo from Colombia, Antonio Sanabria from Paraguay and Adem Ljajic from Serbia — were refused entry on Friday night and later left their teammates to board a flight to Italy.

Roma chief executive Italo Zanzi said on the club website that “it’s real disappointment for us, given that we’ve made a substantial effort to be here” but said Indonesian fans had warmly welcomed the team.

It is Roma’s first tour of Indonesia.
