MILWAUKEE (AP) _ A mob of about 20 youths beat a man brain dead with bats, boards and shovels after he punched one of them in the mouth for throwing an egg at him, police said.

Three suspects, ages 10, 13 and 14, were in custody Monday, police said. Charlie Young Jr., 36, remained on life support in critical condition Tuesday. Hospital officials asked that his location be withheld.

The gang chased Young onto the porch of a house Sunday night and pummeled him, leaving blood splattered from floor to ceiling, police said.

Young managed to briefly escape into the house, but the children dragged him back outside and beat him until police responded to a neighbor’s 911 call, the landlord said.

Authorities did not know Monday night why Young was nearly four miles from his home, whether or not the youths knew him and where the confrontation began.

The boys in custody could be charged as soon as Tuesday. Police continued to search for as many as 18 other juveniles involved in the assault.

Young chased a small group of boys who threw an egg at him, police said. He caught a 14-year-old boy and punched him in the mouth, knocking out a tooth, they said.

The juveniles quickly assembled a larger group of 18 or 20, ages 10 to 18, and chased Young to the porch, police said.
