Funeral arrangements announced for Cleveland police officer who died following training exercise
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Funeral arrangements are set for Vu Nguyen, the veteran Cleveland police officer who died Friday, days after he collapsed during a training exercise in extreme heat.
Nguyen’s wake will be held from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. and 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Chambers Funeral Home, 4420 Rocky River Drive, Cleveland, according to a post on the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association’s Facebook page.
The funeral will begin 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Angels, 3644 Rocky River Drive, Cleveland.
He leaves behind a wife and two children.
Nguyen had been on life support intermittently since collapsing and losing consciousness Monday at a training exercise for officers seeking a position for handling drug-sniffing dogs. He fell during a timed 1.5-mile run.
He was initially treated at MetroHealth before he was flown to the Cleveland Clinic.
Nguyen had no known pre-existing conditions prior to the collapse, CPPA president Jeff Follmer said.
Nguyen became a Cleveland police officer in 1998. He most recently worked in a specialized unit in the city’s Third District, Follmer said.
“The outpouring of support from the Cleveland community and beyond has been truly amazing and greatly appreciated,” a joint statement from Cleveland police officials and Nguyen’s family says. “Patrol Officer Vu Nguyen is greatly loved by his family and by his brothers and sisters in blue.”
