ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Hikers are embarking on a 500-mile expedition that will traverse New Mexico from end to end to chart out the best route and identify what challenges might lay ahead as the state moves closer to establishing the Rio Grande Trail. Following in the footsteps of other western states, New Mexico is looking to capitalize on its vistas and mild weather with the creation of a long-distance trail that runs along one of North America’s longest rivers. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — An alleged assassin of the Juarez Cartel has been extradited from Mexico to Albuquerque in connection with a 2008 brutal slaying of a 53-year-old man. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that Jaime Veleta Jr. recently was extradited to New Mexico for his role in the death of Danny Baca. By Russell Contreras. LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The New Mexico attorney general’s office wants Roman Catholic church officials around the state to allow it to review personnel records for any material that might be related to past or present allegations of sexual abuse. The Diocese of Las Cruces said Wednesday it had received a letter from the office requesting the review and will cooperate. Letters were also sent to the Santa Fe Archdiocese and the diocese in Gallup. SENT: 450 words.
