Apple Cuts Macintosh Quadra Prices

CAMPBELL, Calif. (AP) _ Apple Computer Inc. on Tuesday announced price cuts for Macintosh Quadra computers a rebate for selected computers with printers.

The price reductions are being implemented in anticipation of the introduction of Macintosh models incorporating a powerful, new computer chip.

Next month Apple is expected to unveil new computers based on the PowerPC chip, which Apple is developing with IBM and Motorola. The PowerPC is designed to compete with Intel Corp.’s microprocessors, which are the ″brains″ of four out of five personal computers.

The first computers based on the PowerPC chip are expected to be available in the next few months.

The price cuts on Macintosh Quadra computers range from 7 percent to 18 percent. Customers who purchase a Quadra 650 or Quadra 605 with a qualifying printer before March 31 can get a $150 mail-in rebate.
