D-Backs’ Villarreal Goes on DL
PHOENIX (AP) _ The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-hander Oscar Villarreal on the 15-day disabled list Monday and recalled right-hander Lance Cormier from Triple-A Tucson.
Villarreal has a right rotator cuff strain. He was injured on a pitch that Jason Repko of Los Angeles hit for a two-run homer in the Diamondbacks’ 5-4 victory over the Dodgers on Sunday.
Villarreal, slowed by elbow problems in spring training, is exected to be sidelined for two to four weeks, manager Bob Melvin said. An MRI on Monday indicated that surgery would not be necessary.
Cormier, 24, will be used as a long reliever, Melvin said. Cormier was 1-4 with an 8.14 ERA in five starts for the Diamondbacks last season. He allowed six runs on six hits in 3 2-3 innings in his first start for Tucson last Thursday.
Villarreal joins reliever Jose Valverde (right biceps tendinitis) and Greg Aquino (right ulna nerve irritation) on the DL.
