November 30, 2018

LAKE CITY, S.C. – The Lake City Launchpad is accepting applications for its second business competition until Dec. 31 after rolling out a successful inaugural competition in 2017.

Lake City Launchpad is an annual business competition that awards the winning submission a cumulative $55,000 prize to assist the winning applicant with opening a business in historic downtown Lake City.

The winner of last year’s competition, Piggyback’s BBQ & Catfish, is scheduled to open the doors of its new location on Sauls Street in downtown Lake City in January.

The Greater Lake City Community Development Office hosts the Lake City Launchpad competition and will provide an identified building for the winner, according to an announcement from Visit Lake City SC.

After all applications are received by 5 p.m. Dec. 31, applicants will have until Feb. 1, 2019 to submit business plans which will be reviewed by a Greater Lake City Community Development Office Selection Committee. Finalists will be announced on March 1.

All finalists will make presentations to the Greater Lake City Community Development Office in March. Winners will be announced on April 5, the release said. With the announcement comes the sought-after-prize of a $20,000 cash incentive (forgivable over a four-year period), plus $35,000 for upfit and renovations to an identified building. The development office also offers assistance with obtaining required licenses and permits.

“Entrepreneurs have a wonderful opportunity to join the local business community in historic downtown Lake City, currently experiencing a noticeable revitalization,” the announcement said.

Results include façade renovations for existing businesses, acquisition and renovation of formerly vacant downtown properties and a commitment to maintaining attractively landscaped sidewalk and public spaces.

“Positive change is in the air with tangible results, and now is the time to bring your idea for a fabulous small-town business to fruition with the welcome head start that is Lake City Launchpad,” the announcement said.
