Soccer: Parma Downs Dortmund
LONDON (AP) _ Hernan Crespo’s second-half goal gave Parma a 1-0 victory over defending champion Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday and moved it to first place in its Champions Cup group.
Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester United all moved closer to clinching quarterfinal berths, while Barcelona is virtually eliminated.
Parma’s seven points leads Group A with Dortmund a point behind. Sparta Prague is two points further back after a 3-0 victory over Turkey’s Galatasaray, which is pointless and in last place.
Carsten Jancker and Giovane Elber each scored twice as Bayern crushed Paris Saint Germain 5-1 for its third straight victory. Turkey’s Besiktas jumped ahead of PSG and into second place by beating last place IFK Goteborg 1-0.
Real Madrid, the record six-time winner of the Champions Cup, trounced Olympiakos 5-1. Norway’s Rosenborg downed FC Porto 2-0 to stay in second place, three points behind Real Madrid, which had nine.
Manchester United beat Feyenoord 2-1 on goals by Paul Scholes and Irish international Dennis Irwin and has a maximum nine points from three games, three more than Juventus, which beat Slovakia’s Kosice 1-0 on an early goal by Alessandro Del Piero.
Barcelona, expected to be one of the leading title contenders, lost 3-0 to Dinamo Kiev to fall to 0-2-1. Barcelona has one point and is six behind group leader Kiev with three games to play.
Dutch champion PSV Eindhoven edged Newcastle 1-0 on a first-half goal by Wim Jink to move up to third place. Both Newcastle and PSV are three points behind Kiev.
Monaco jumped to the top of Group F on goal differential after a 5-1 crushing of Belgium’s Lierse behind two goals by David Trezeguet.
Monaco is tied in points with Bayer Levekusen, a 2-0 victor at Sporting Lisbon.
