Finalists named for 2018 Women Tech Awards
The Women Tech Council announced the finalists for the 2018 Women Tech Awards. Now in their 11th year, the awards recognize technology-focused women throughout the industry who are driving innovation, creating new technologies, impacting technology companies and inspiring the technology community.
“In their roles spreading from entry-level positions to the C-suite and boardroom, women have been central to the growth of Utah’s tech community by driving innovation and change across the industry,” said Cydni Tetro, president of WTC. “Recognizing the accomplishments and contributions of these women helps strengthen the talent pool across the industry and inspires the next generation of women in STEM.”

Highland and Cedar Hills top tax-friendly cities
A recent study by SmartAsset found that Highland and Cedar Hills rank No. 1 and 2 for being the most tax-friendly cities in Utah for retirees.
According to the study, Utah overall is moderately tax-friendly for retirees. While residents are taxed on their Social Security and retirement income, Utahns also enjoy fairly low property taxes and sales taxes.
The average effective property tax rate is 0.67 percent, and Highland and Cedar Hills come in under that. When fuel and sales taxes are factored in, these two cities are the only Utah County cities to make it to the top 10.
The study looked at how the tax policies of each city would impact a retiree with a $50,000 income, who gets $15,000 from Social Security benefits, $10,000 from a private pension, $15,000 from retirement savings like a 401(k) or IRA and $10,000 in wages.
Provo leads state in tech salaries in online review
Business.org recently compared 100 city tech salaries across the United States with their respective state salary averages for all other jobs. The report, “ The Top Tech Salaries of 100 US Cities in 2018,” found that Provo topped Salt Lake City and Ogden for its tech salaries.
“Provo, Utah, is no one’s go-to in urban metropolis trivia, but you’d make over $30,000 a year more there in tech than in any other profession in the state,” said the study’s author, Bill Frost, in his report.
Provo carries an average tech salary of $96,000, the highest in Utah and 47 percent more than the state average salary of $65,000. Ogden averages $83,000 for tech salaries, and Salt Lake City’s average is $81,000. According to the study, Salt Lake City’s cost of living is 5.6 percent more expensive and housing is 15.4 percent more expensive than in Provo. Salt Lake City has 49.4 percent higher housing costs than Ogden.
The study factored in the following tech occupations: actuaries, research scientists, network architects, network support specialists, programmers, systems analysts, customer support specialists, database administrators, information security analysts, mathematicians, network and computer systems administrators, operations research analysts, software developers, statisticians and web developers.
