Fans Rush for Springsteen Tickets

September 20, 1999

GILBERT, Ariz. (AP) _ U S West couldn’t keep up with fan demand for The Boss.

Fans crippled phone service for as long as two hours Friday trying to buy tickets for Bruce Springsteen’s upcoming concert in Phoenix. About 60,000 residents in this suburban community were affected.

U S West’s Gilbert switching office collapsed under the high volume of calls shortly after tickets went on sale at 10 a.m., said Jim Roof, a company spokesman.

``It was like a major traffic jam. No calls went in, no calls went out,″ Roof said.

Springsteen will perform with the E Street Band on Oct. 15 at America West Arena as part of the band’s first U.S. tour since 1988′s ``Tunnel of Love.″
