RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ Jerry Foltz shot a surprising 7-under-par 65 Thursday to take 1-shot lead in the opening round of the $225,000 Nike Dominion Open.

The day before in the pro-am, Foltz shot a dismal 14-over 86 over the par-72, 7,020-yard The Dominion Club course.

``I'm baffled as anyone,'' Foltz said about the 21-stroke turnaround. ``I would give anything to see my four pro-am partners' faces.''

Casey Martin, Brian Bateman and Steve Haskins were all one stroke back. Sixty-six players shot better than par, and defending champion Jeff Julian finished with an even-par 72.
