Bus Accident Injures Nearly 50

January 18, 1998

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ A public transit bus collided with a car on a freeway offramp Saturday and rammed into a tree, injuring about 50 people.

None of the injuries were life-threatening, Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

Paramedics set up a triage area at the scene in Sherman Oaks, a Los Angeles suburb.

Some passengers were outfitted with neck braces, while others were brought to hospitals. Most of the injured, however, were ``walking wounded,″ Humphrey said.

The accident occurred when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus, heading down the offramp, failed to negotiate a sharp turn and hit the car, witnesses said.

The bus then careened into a tree and some bushes and over into a nearby onramp.
