Swans edge first-place Port Adelaide in AFL
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Lance Franklin kicked five goals in the second half to lead the Sydney Swans to a 14.14 (98) to 13.16 (94) victory over first-place Port Adelaide in the Australian Football League on Saturday.
It was the Swans’ eighth win in a row this season and ninth in 10 matches against Port Adelaide.
The result left the Swans in third place, level on points with Hawthorn but with an inferior points-for and against percentage. Both are just four points behind Port Adelaide after 12 matches.
Defending champions Hawthorn fought off a Carlton comeback attempt to beat the Blues 18.10 (118) to 13.12 (90).
The Hawks dominated the final quarter in Carlton coach Mick Malthouse’s 700th game in that capacity in the AFL and its predecessor, the Victorian Football League.
