July 4, 1999

PITTSBURGH (AP) _ Jeff Cirillo drove in three runs and Bill Pulsipher pitched five innings to win in his first start since April 18 as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-4 Saturday night.

The Brewers have won all five games in Pittsburgh this season and have won nine of their last 10 road games.

Cirillo had a two-run single in the second inning, when the Brewers scored five runs on only two hits off Kris Benson (6-6).

Marquis Grissom opened the inning with his ninth homer of the season. Benson then walked two and hit a batter to load the bases before Cirillo’s single made it 3-0. Two more runs scored on first baseman Kevin Young’s fielding error and a wild pitch.

Cirillo also homered in the fifth and Grissom had an RBI single in the seventh.

Pulsipher (2-1), who spent the last month in the minors on a rehab assignment, allowed two runs and six hits. It was his first appearance for the Brewers since he hurt his back in the Brewers’ home opener.

Freddy Garcia homered for Pittsburgh in the fourth, and Al Martin drove in a pair of runs for the Pirates with a single and sacrifice fly.

Pinch-hitter Ivan Cruz hit his first major league home run for Pittsburgh in the seventh.

Notes: Two Brewers left the game in the sixth with bruised knees. Catcher Bobby Hughes injured his left knee when he was bowled over by Benson on a play at the plate in the fourth. Second baseman Ron Belliard hurt his right knee when Kevin Young ran into him trying to break up a double play in the fifth. ... Milwaukee’s Mark Loretta led off the game with a single to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, matching his career best. ... Martin’s 12-game hitting streak matches his career high, set in 1995. ... Pirates reliever Mike Williams, who is on the disabled list with biceps tendinitis, did some light throwing before the game and reported no problems. Williams leads the Pirates with 14 saves. He is expected to return after the All-Star break.
