Police: Man was deliberately hit by vehicle
KANKAKEE — Anthony Stewart II was deliberately hit by a vehicle in the early hours of New Year’s Day, according to police.
“It was not a hit and run. It was a deliberate attack,” Dave Skelly, investigations commander for Kankakee police, told the Daily Journal on Wednesday.
The new evidence came via video surveillance from a nearby business. Skelly said investigators do have a person of interest they want to interview.
The 40-year-old Stewart was found laying in the road in the 200 block of North Chicago Avenue at 1:38 a.m. on Tuesday. Stewart was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nearby, another man was found laying on the sidewalk with a head injury, the victim of a battery. He was taken to Presence St. Mary’s Hospital. Investigators still need to interview the man.
Skelly said it appears the two incidents are related.
In yet another incident, Kankakee County sheriff’s police are investigating a shooting of a 35-year-old man that occurred at 3:44 a.m. Tuesday in the 1800 block of South Sandbar Road, which is located a mile north and east of Aroma Park.
The victim was found on the porch of a home. He told the resident he had been shot. Sheriff investigators still were working on where the shooting occurred.
“I feel that the crime on Sandbar Road is not mine to comment on,” Skelly said when asked if it could be related to the city’s investigation.
