USC’s Claiborne Wins Butkus Award
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) _ Southern California’s Chris Claiborne received the Butkus Award on Friday night as the nation’s top college linebacker.
Claiborne, a junior, leads the Trojans with 107 tackles, 77 unassisted. He also has six interceptions and five sacks.
Claiborne edged Texas A&M’s Dat Nguyen, the Chuck Bednarik Trophy winner Thursday night as the defensive player of the year, and Florida’s Jevon Kearse in voting conducted by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando.
Also Friday night, former Ohio State star Randy Gradishar was presented the Butkus Silver Anniversary Award. Butkus was a star linebacker for the University of Illinois and the Chicago Bears.
