Spice up the season with these plaid tidings
Mad for plaid!
After more than four years with the same, slightly tattered artificial Christmas tree, I decided it was time for a new one. Having found a beautiful, lightly flocked tree pre-adorned with pine cones and red berries, I’m starting to realize that I might need to update my ornaments to better match the warm, woodsy look. Enter the latest buffalo plaid trend.
Whether red black or black and white, this checked pattern is swiftly replacing traditional red and green color schemes when it comes to holiday decor. With plaid populating everything from ornaments to wreaths to stockings and even your festive wardrobe, there are oodles of options for incorporating this trend in your festive decor. When it comes to donning the tree, there are countless options for complementing that evergreen with contrasting red or simple black and white patterns. In fact, rustic, farmhouse style black and white ornaments are one of this year’s latest trends. Naturally, the black and white buffalo plaid pattern is a great, on-trend option.
Make your own buffalo plaid ornaments by covering styrofoam balls in strips of plaid fabric. Add a looping bow, hint of glitter and maybe a sprig of berries or holly for a new tree theme. Snag some rolls of buffalo plaid ribbon and create some fluffy bows and weave strands of the ribbon through the branches to fill in any gaps.
If you’re looking for some new stockings to hang by the chimney with care, consider a flannel buffalo plaid adorned with fluffy fur trim. Grab plaid stockings in a variety of colors, a different one for each member of the family. Embroider or appliqué everyone’s names on them for a new cabin-like feel.
If your Christmas theme incorporates wildlife, try making some stockings featuring silhouettes of deer, bears or even your favorite pooch made out of buffalo plaid fabric. Find some stockings in a solid color, print out a pattern of your preferred animal and cut out the shape from your favorite plaid color and attach it to the stocking either by iron-on transfer or stitch it on.
To fully embrace the buffalo plaid trend, incorporate the pattern into your holiday wreaths. Whether you find a new one adorned in the checked pattern, create your own design or even refresh an old dusty one, buffalo plaid can easily be wrapped ’round the traditional door decor. Try taking a basic foam wreath and wrap a buffalo check scarf around the wreath. Bonus points if you have fringe on the scarf. Secure with hot glue as you wrap it around the form to secure. Let the fringy ends of the scarf hang loose at the bottom of the wreath. To add a bit more color or contrast, add boxwood branches or a bough of evergreen at the base of the wreath. Adorn with a colorful ribbon, jingle bells or ornament.
