ATLANTA (AP) _ Javier Lopez snapped a tie with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday night to give the Atlanta Braves a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres.
With one out in the eighth, Chipper Jones drew a walk from reliever Willie Blair (2-1) and was forced at second base by Fred McGriff. David Justice singled McGriff to second and McGriff scored on Lopez's sharp grounder up the middle.
Lopez had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in his 30th run of the season. Mark Wohlers (4-3) worked 1 1-3 innings of scoreless relief to gain the victory.
Braves starter Kent Mercker gave up only four hits, struck out four and walked one in seven innings, leaving with a 2-0 lead after he hurt himself running out a double.
San Diego tied it with two runs in the eighth as Atlanta's bullpen failed to hold a lead for the second straight night. Pinch-hitter Scott Livingstone led off with a double against Greg McMichael and Steve Finley had an RBI-double. After Finley stole third base, Tony Gwynn hit an RBI-single off Pedro Borbon.
Marquis Grissom had a solo homer, his seventh, in the third inning and Mark Lemke singled in a run in the fourth.
Mercker, who lost in San Diego 3-1 last Sunday, retired 13 of the first 14 batters he faced.
San Diego starter Glen Dishman allowed two runs, seven hits and two walks in seven innings.
