PARIS (AP) _ A court has fined France Telecom $3.9 million for accidentally broadcasting part of a porno film to televisions in the mainly Muslim Middle East, sources at a French television station said Friday.

The court ruled that the communications giant made a ``big mistake'' on July 19, 1997, when it transmitted the movie on a satellite that covers Arab countries instead of one that sends a coded signal to French territories in the Pacific.

Instead of a sports and culture program, viewers in the Middle East received 20 minutes of a film titled ``Private Club in Portugal.''

The television station, Canal France International, which broadcasts French programs abroad, had sought $20 million in damages because the Arabsat network had canceled its contract with the station after the mixup.

French television stations regularly broadcast soft porn films late in the evening.
