Power back on in Huntington after storm, high winds

April 1, 2019

HUNTINGTON — Power is back on around most of Huntington after a late Saturday night storm and high winds downed trees and caused equipment problems and outages around the region.

As of at 10:25 a.m. Sunday, there were still outages in some parts of Huntington, including Southside, Highlawn and some parts of downtown. There were also isolated patches near Lesage, just north of Milton on Union Ridge Road and some outages just west of Branchland.

Local spots in Kentucky still without power Sunday morning included a small area near Lloyd in Greenup County, a few houses on the south side of Ashland and several outage areas in Lawrence County, Ky., including south of Fallsburg and near Webbville.

In southern Ohio, there were still a handful of outages in Scioto County between Wheelersburg and Franklin Furnace.

Across the region, the storm also caused outages across West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky and Virginia. Phil Moye, a spokesman for Appalachian Power, which services West Virginia and Virginia, said the main Huntington outage of about 13,000 customers was caused by a failed piece of equipment at the DARRAH substation that serves part of Huntington.

That outage was reported at the height of a storm front blowing through that brought heavy rains and high winds.

“We were getting some heavy rain and wind at the time, but we don’t know if that contributed to it or not,” Moye said. “I think on that problem we had most of those restored by about 7:30 a.m. We have had a couple other things though.”

The largest of those things has been a Saturday forest fire that burned about 150 acres off of Raccoon Creek Road near the Wayne and Lincoln county lines. As of 4 p.m. Sunday, there were still 200 households without power, but those were expected to restored by Sunday evening.

“It was a pretty big forest fire that caught several poles on fire, and we had to replace at least one of those,” Moye said of the poles located on Appalachian Power’s Midkiff Ranger Circuit, which serves near Hamlin and Ranger in Lincoln County.
