Hopes Dim for Crew in Sinking; Two Empty Life Rafts Found

January 5, 1994

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (AP) _ Hopes of finding survivors from a sunken ore freighter dimmed Tuesday as a Canadian coast guard vessel picked up two empty life rafts from a churning sea.

The Greek-owned Marika 7, which carried a crew of 36, went down in a storm Saturday 900 miles east of Newfoundland.

Capt. Guy Bergeron of the coast guard ship Sir Wilfred Grenfell reported, ″We don’t believe that there was anyone in those rafts when they went overboard.″

Besides the two 16-person life rafts, a life raft that could accommodate 25 was known to be aboard the Marika 7.

There has been no sign of the ship’s six Greek officers and 30 Filipino crew since two flares were sighted Saturday.
