Second Baptist repeats as TAPPS state champion
The Second Baptist boys golf team retained its place atop TAPPS 5A, winning its second consecutive state championship April 29-30 at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco.
Second Baptist scored a 578 during the two-day tournament, finishing 12 strokes ahead of Laredo St. Augustine. The Eagles led by 10 after a first-round 287.
William Vick was the individual runner-up, carding rounds of 66 and 67 for a 133. Samuel Oelfke (142) finished tied for ninth and Donovan Dastmalchian (143) placed 11th, with Richard Callaway (160) and Tyler Holt (193) completing the Eagles’ championship team.
All five are seniors. Second Baptist never finished lower than third during the last four years, including a runner-up finish in 2017.
Duchesne finished fifth in the TAPPS 6A girls standings but boasted a top-10 finisher in Danielle Talley, who led the Chargers with a fourth-place 151.
Awty International’s Alice Linsig carded a 155 at Stonetree Golf Club in Killeen, placing eighth in the girls 6A division.
Jason Diebner represented Emery/Weiner at state, placing 15th in the boys 5A standings with a 152.
