LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) _ Joe Hughes passed for two touchdowns and Wyoming’s defense shut down a final Louisville drive as the Cowboys rallied for a 26-24 victory Saturday night.
Hughes’ 19-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Yarborough at the start of the fourth quarter put Wyoming up 26-17.
Jeff Brohm awakened a sleeping Louisville offense with a nine-play, 87-yard scoring march culminated by an 11-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Cook with 7:35 left in the game. Brohm had key runs of 10 and 22 yards on crucial third-down situations during the drive.
Trailing by two, Louisville’s defense sacked Hughes for the eighth time and forced Wyoming to punt from deep inside its own territory. Ralph Dawkins returned the kick 29 yards to set up a first-and-10 at the Wyoming 27 for Louisville.
Louisville had key runs by Dawkins and Brohm to set up a first-and-goal with two minutes left.
But Wyoming’s defense held Dawkins for a no-gainer, then tackled him for losses of two and three yards.
Brandon Brookfield missed a 23-yard field goal with 58 seconds left and Wyoming ran out the clock.
Wyoming’s defense keyed the win. The Cowboys held Louisville to just seven offensive plays in the third period for just 3 yards. Wyoming forced one fumble and Paul Wallace intercepted a Brohm pass with 3:58 left in the period that set up Hughes’ decisive scoring pass.
Wyoming also tackled Louisville’s Chris Fitzpatrick in the end zone for a safety at 5:15.
The Cowboys intercepted a Brohm pass on Louisville’s first offensive series of the fourth quarter.
The teams battled to a 17-17 tie at the half.
Wyoming’s defense again contributed. The Cowboys turned a fumble recovery into a 38-yard field goal by Kris Mindlin and Jarrod Thiele returned an interception 21 yards for a score.
Dawkins scored on a 7-yard run on the second play of the game for Louisville. Freshman Larrame Furman returned a kickoff 84 yards for Louisville.
Hughes hit Yarborough with a 58-yard TD pass in the second quarter. The two scoring receptions give Yarborough 20 for his career, a Wyoming record.
Louisville had possession of the ball just 18:53 in the game, to 41:07 by Wyoming.
Brohm finished with 206 yards on 11 of 32 passes. He was intercepted three times.
Hughes completed 24 of 37 passes for 298 yards. He was sacked nine times.
